The Power of Cultural Awareness: How Intent, Impact, and Communication Shape Leadership
A single phrase can reveal the importance of cultural awareness.
In today’s interconnected world, leaders communicate across diverse teams, communities, and cultures every day. A word, phrase, or action that feels familiar in one environment may be interpreted differently in another. This reality reminds us of an important leadership principle: intent does not always equal impact.
Recent discussions surrounding comments made by a Toronto women’s basketball coach highlight how commonly used expressions can carry different meanings depending on historical, cultural, and social context. While the phrase “protected species” may be recognized in some sports communities as an idiom describing a star player who receives preferential treatment, its interpretation can vary across audiences.
This moment provides a valuable leadership lesson: effective communication requires more than good intentions. It requires awareness, curiosity, and an understanding of how messages are received.
Cultural Awareness Goes Beyond Avoiding Misunderstandings
Cultural awareness is not simply about avoiding offense—it is about building stronger relationships and creating environments where people feel respected, valued, and understood.
For leaders, cultural awareness means:
Recognizing that individuals bring unique experiences, perspectives, and backgrounds to the workplace
Understanding how language and behaviors may be interpreted differently across cultures
Practicing emotional intelligence when engaging with diverse audiences
Creating trust through intentional and respectful communication
Organizations that embrace cultural awareness are better positioned to improve collaboration, strengthen employee engagement, and foster innovation.
A Personal Reflection: Cultural Awareness in the U.S. Navy
Throughout my career as a Senior Public Affairs professional aboard a U.S. Navy ship, I experienced firsthand the importance of preparing leaders and teams to engage across cultures.
One of my responsibilities was developing and disseminating cultural awareness materials before each port visit. I created informational content for shipwide displays and provided leaders with briefing materials to prepare Sailors and Marines to respectfully engage with the cultures, customs, and traditions of each host nation.
Having navigated my own cultural adjustments when I joined the military, I understood the value of intentional preparation and awareness. The Navy’s commitment to fostering cultural understanding reinforced an important belief that continues to guide my work today:
Effective communication begins with awareness, respect, and a willingness to understand others.
