We Talk Race and Gender: But What About Religion?
“Our ability to reach unity in diversity will be the beauty and the test of our civilization.” Mahatma Gandhi.
Let's unpack overlooked discrimination to to make room for faith and religion. We readily acknowledge injustice when it pertains to race or gender, but do we notice it when it comes to faith? Religious discrimination is a pervasive issue that often goes unrecognized, despite its widespread impact.
Consider these Realities:
Global Pervasiveness: A staggering 84% of the world's population identifies with a religion. Yet, according to Pew Research, religious harassment and discrimination whether by governments or individuals, has been reported in over 80% of countries globally. This highlights a significant disparity between the prevalence of religious belief and the safety and respect afforded to those who hold them.
Impact in Education: In schools, students from minority faiths frequently encounter exclusion, bullying, or subtle (and not-so-subtle) pressure to conform. This can create an unwelcoming and even hostile learning environment, hindering their academic and social development.
Workplace Challenges: Employees too, report significant challenges. Many face denials of reasonable accommodations for their religious practices or endure microaggressions related to their beliefs. This can lead to decreased job satisfaction, limited career advancement, and an overall sense of not belonging.
Community Fragmentation: Within our communities, religious bias erodes trust and weakens the very fabric of social cohesion. When individuals feel marginalized because of their faith, it fractures the collective sense of unity and shared purpose that healthy communities rely on.
Religious bias is just as damaging as any other form of discrimination. It's time we stopped overlooking it and actively worked to foster truly inclusive environments that honor all identities, including faith.
