A Reminder of Why Youth Engagement Still Matters

This past Friday, I had the distinct honor of serving as a guest speaker at a youth event hosted at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. The audience? Bright, ambitious rising high school seniors from across the country, many of whom had never been to the nation's capital before.

I arrived nearly two hours early, something I often do not just out of preparedness, but because it gives me time to engage with the young people beyond the stage. I helped them set up the seating and used that moment to spark casual, meaningful conversations. Their energy was contagious. They spoke with excitement about exploring the city, their dreams of one day working in D.C., and the future they envision for themselves. It was a refreshing reminder that today’s youth are charting their own course, and they’re hungry for guidance.

This is the heart of what we do at Mavis Brown Consulting supporting youth ages 11 to 24 with services and solutions that focus on personal growth, leadership development, and critical life skills. While the United Nations defines "youth" as individuals between the ages of 15 and 24, we recognize that the need for support often starts earlier and evolves well into young adulthood.

One persistent gap I continue to see whether I’m mentoring, leading workshops, or volunteering, is the lack of financial literacy, life skills, and social-emotional intelligence. These aren’t just “nice-to-have” skills; they are the foundation for personal and professional success.

  • Life Skills help youth cope with stress, regulate emotions, make decisions, and navigate challenges.

  • Social Skills enable healthy communication, empathy, conflict resolution, and collaboration.

  • Financial literacy empowers them to manage money, set goals, and make informed financial decisions

Without these foundational abilities, young people may struggle to thrive in school, relationships, workspaces, or society at large. And yet, these skills are too often treated as afterthoughts, if they are taught at all. I’m passionate about youth development. It's more than a job, it's a calling.

At Mavis Brown Consulting, we’re committed to closing the gap through intentional programming that prepares youth for real-life success: offering workshops, mentorship, coaching, and tools designed to nurture confident, capable, and civically engaged young leaders.

Let’s build a generation that’s ready—not just for work, but for life.
